As a Consultant, Valerie’s day-to-day work involves conducting customer research and interpreting findings to make constructive recommendations from the information gathered.
She sees herself as representing the voice of the customer and find ways of delivering value to them that are consistent with her client’s business. She believes the first step to designing and communicating effectively is to base design decisions on real customer insights. How did you learn about UXSG?
I’ve had my brushes with UXSG meetups but really got sucked in when I attended my first conference in 2014 as a new Foolproofer. It was an incredibly personal experience, it was clear that the volunteers had poured their hearts into this; I felt such a kind of solidarity throughout the event.
What made you volunteer for the UXSG Conference this year?
Because of that solidarity and the desire to belong in this and the pursuit of meaning haha.
How has the journey been?
It is so tough – I need some time to sit and do nothing for a bit.
What are your personal quirks?
I hoard post-its, browser tabs (too many good articles to read!) and packaging.
I go through an internal struggle every time I have to throw good packaging away and then end up keeping them. So I hate stuff that comes in beautiful packaging, good solid material etc. – it’s such a waste of resources! – but I secretly love them too…
Is there any words of advice or quotes you live by?
It’s so hard to remember this: “it’s all temporary.”
